Continuing our Richmond perspective

Favourite things to do:

Walking, cycling on oceanside and countryside trails … Steveston fishing village has  boardwalks along the water, close to the airport is Terra Nova where the snow geese below migrate through, Shell Road trail is along farmland where blueberries and cranberries grow

When it’s raining there is Riverport at Entertainment Way, a lot in one area … food, theatres, bowling, skating and swimming

Favourite Parks:

Minoru Park and Garden City Park are both beautiful parks in the city centre.  Other parks are great too, combining the green space from elementary schools, high schools, community centres and parks so there is a large green space for walking, cycling, etc.

Favourite place to shop:

Aberdeen, Lansdowne and Richmond Centre are all great malls along the handy Canada Line skytrain route or city centre bike path

Fruit & Vegetable or flower markets are everywhere because Richmond is known as the “Garden City”  Art Knapps is a great place to get flowers

Steveston with unique items in the quaint village

Favourite Events:

There are a lot of interesting events to go to which are advertised in the 2 Richmond newspapers, this one is watching the Mars Waterbomber demonstration of how it scoops up water to put out forest fires.

This one is the annual Christmas carol ships

Favourite Restaurants:

Japanese food – Matsuyama close to Lansdowne skytrain station

Greek food – Kisamos in Steveston

Indian food – Curry Express (fast food) inside Lansdowne Mall

Vietnamese food – Vina (fast food) inside Richmond Centre

Italian food – Spaghetti Factory at Entertainment Way … great for teens with big appetites

Fish & Chips (is that British, I think so!) – Pajo’s eat on the floating dock in Steveston

Swedish food – IKEA … shop and have those meatballs too

Favourite Canadian Moment in Richmond:

An impromptu neighbourhood skating party on a frozen field

Guests arriving in Richmond….

What a great prize package we won in the Share Richmond contest!

We had the opportunity to share our city and Olympic experience with our American guests arriving at YVR on Air Canada…

A new Panasonic HD camcorder was ours to try it out before going to any events (view from airport) …

Ah… they made it!

We won hotel accomodation at the beautiful new Westin Wall Centre in Richmond… close to the airport, skytrain, and Olympic Speedskating Oval…

One of the views from the hotel…

The next day we headed into Vancouver for the Opening Ceremonies.   Our guests were impressed with the easy transportation in our city: bike, bus and skytrain all in one system…

The atmosphere of the 2010 Opening Ceremonies was a wintry snowy white and audience participation with lighting and drums made the experience not only fantastic but memorable as well…

The ever changing scenes… this one of totem poles which transformed into the magnificent cedars of Vancouver Island…

The snowboarders and skiers coming from the skies…

Athletes from around the world walked in very close to where we were seated…

The inspiring Rick Hansen of  Richmond carried the Olympic torch…

Lighting the cauldron…

The evening ended with the Olympic flame being carried out by Wayne Gretzky to light the outdoor cauldron…

Next were our events in Richmond…

The international community have definitely arrived…the Dutch brought 400 bikes for their citizens and other guests to use on our bike paths.  They were all lined up at the speedskating oval…

We met some of them in their traditional colour of orange…

The Russians were also in town…

We had some beautiful weather to line up on the riverside walking trail before the Richmond  Oval opened…

It was an awesome experience to see all the flags of the competitors and see an Olympic record made…

We enjoyed being part of the crowd and cheering on our athletes… flowers and medals for some…

After our events was time to meander and show our guests around.

Shipping is one of the important industries here so the Olympic symbol of an Inukshuk was created out of shipping containers (about 6 stories high)…

There was  beautiful ice art showcased at the entrance to the Ozone…

and a collection of the history of speedskating displayed at City Hall…

We went to see the dolls of intricate detail from Canada’s northern communities in the Gateway Theatre…

We also went to browse in the malls along the skytrain line with our prepaid Visa card…dangerous 🙂

We had spring weather to enjoy…

great for checking out a cool new family friendly park…

Finn Slough, Steveston fishing village and Terra Nova were some our favourite spots we showed our guests along the way…

and all too soon it was time for them to leave but they will be back we suspect 🙂
